Gros Michel is a Common joker giving +15 Mult, with a 1 in 6 chance to be destroyed at the end of each round. When it breaks, your save is flagged extinct: Gros Michel never returns, and the upgrade Cavendish (X3 Mult) takes its place in the shop. It is the only joker in Balatro you have to lose to upgrade, and the names come straight from real banana history.
Gros Michel vs Cavendish
| Field | Gros Michel | Cavendish |
|---|---|---|
| Rarity / Cost | Common / $5 | Common / $4 |
| Effect | +15 Mult | X3 Mult |
| Destroy chance | 1 in 6 per round | 1 in 1000 per round |
| Appears when | not extinct yet | after Gros Michel is destroyed |
The two never share a shop. A single save flag toggles between them.
How the swap works
- Default: Gros Michel is in the pool, Cavendish cannot appear.
- Extinction: Gros Michel must be in your Joker slots when the end-of-round 1-in-6 roll hits. Selling it does not count; a Boss Blind that destroys a joker does.
- After: the flag flips permanently. Gros Michel is gone for good, Cavendish joins the Common pool, across all future runs.
Why Cavendish is worth it
| Chips 200, base Mult 10 | Gros Michel | Cavendish |
|---|---|---|
| Mult after joker | 10 + 15 = 25 | 10 x 3 = 30 |
| Final score | 5,000 | 6,000 |
The gap widens as your Mult climbs, and again when Blueprint or Brainstorm copies the X3.
How to force extinction
- Hold it across rounds. Buy Gros Michel early and keep it; a full run usually breaks it.
- Stretch rounds out. White Stake plus the Blue Deck means more hands per round, so more destroy rolls.
- Use a throwaway run. Play one run you do not care about and let the roll resolve without risking a real build.
Buy or skip?
| Your state | Call |
|---|---|
| Not extinct yet | Buy and keep. The 1-in-6 loss is the unlock cost. |
| Ante 1-3, tight money | Buy. $5 for +15 Mult is top-tier common value. |
| Deep in a run you cannot lose | Skip. A 1-in-6 destroy can wreck the build. |
| Cavendish in shop | Buy. X3 Mult is the best common effect. |
The banana history behind the names
From the 1820s to the 1950s, Gros Michel was the dominant commercial banana, over 95% of global exports. Then Panama disease (Fusarium strain TR1) wiped out the plantations, since Gros Michel had no resistance.
Growers switched to Cavendish, which was immune to TR1. It is the banana in nearly every supermarket today, and it is now threatened by a newer strain, TR4. The joker's 1-in-1000 destroy chance is a nod to that ongoing risk. The mechanic where Gros Michel must go extinct before Cavendish appears is a retelling of how the banana trade actually changed hands.
FAQ
You can, but selling never counts toward extinction. Only the end-of-round 1-in-6 destroy roll sets the flag.
No. Challenge runs do not advance unlocks. Play a standard run.
At low Mult, +15 additive can out-score a X3 multiplier in absolute terms. Once your Mult passes 100, the multiplier pulls ahead for good.
