Balatro Mods to Check First
Balatro mods can add new cards, change the interface or help creators test ideas, but modding is not an official feature of Balatro HQ. This page is not a ranked list and does not publish download totals or star ratings. Use it as a safe starting path.
The safest order is:
- understand the loader requirement;
- back up your save;
- read the mod author's own installation notes;
- test one mod at a time;
- keep notes about the exact versions you installed.
Loader stack
Steamodded
Steamodded is the first repository to inspect when a mod says it needs the Steamodded framework. Read the release notes and installation instructions before adding content mods.
Check:
- supported Balatro version;
- required folder structure;
- dependency notes;
- unresolved issues that mention crashes or save problems.
Lovely
Lovely is commonly used alongside Steamodded. Use the maintainer-controlled release page, not a reposted archive.
Check:
- whether the release matches your operating system;
- whether the loader instructions changed recently;
- whether the mod you want lists Lovely as a dependency.
Content mod example
Cryptid
Cryptid is a useful example of a public mod source because you can inspect its repository, release trail and issues. Treat it as an example of what to verify, not as a guarantee that every setup will work.
Before installing any content mod, answer these questions:
- What does the mod change?
- Which loader version does it require?
- Does it document compatibility with your Balatro version?
- Are there open crash or save issues?
- Can you remove it cleanly if it conflicts with another mod?
Quality-of-life and visual mods
Quality-of-life and visual mods are usually lower risk than large gameplay overhauls, but they still need source checks. Prefer small changes when you are testing a new setup:
- interface labels or display helpers;
- visual themes;
- save-safe tools that do not alter run logic;
- small balance experiments you can disable easily.
Avoid bundles that hide their included files or dependencies. A bundle is only useful when it lists every mod, every loader, and every version.
Installation checklist
Before installation
- Back up your save files.
- Close Balatro.
- Read the loader instructions.
- Download from the maintainer's source.
- Save the release version number or commit reference.
During testing
- Add one mod at a time.
- Start a disposable run first.
- Watch for missing assets, crashes or profile errors.
- Keep a short note of what changed.
If something breaks
- Remove the most recently added mod.
- Restore your backed-up save if needed.
- Check the mod's issue tracker.
- Rebuild your setup from the loader upward.
What Balatro HQ will not claim
This page intentionally avoids:
- exact download totals;
- star ratings without a source;
- monthly popularity rankings;
- invented mod packs;
- claims that a mod works on every platform.
Those claims require live data and a date. If a future Balatro HQ page includes mod statistics, it should cite the source next to the number and show when it was checked.
